On Tour 03/10/27-04/16/27 “Her Design Story” by Pamela Rainey

Release Date: March 23, 2027

About The Book:

Her Design Story: Entrepreneurs Who Shaped an Industry (1900s–1960s) introduces eighteen remarkable women who built creative lives and, in the process, helped shape the modern design industry. Long before women were routinely welcomed into professional or entrepreneurial roles, these women turned curiosity, talent, determination, and sometimes sheer necessity into careers of their own. Some discovered art and design without formal training. Others reinvented themselves after divorce, financial hardship, war, loss, or unexpected turns in their lives. Again and again, they found a way forward when the path they wanted didn’t yet exist.

Behind their beautiful interiors, textiles, architecture, products, and businesses are deeply human stories of ambition, friendship, romance, heartbreak, resilience, and reinvention. These women traveled the world, crossed social and cultural boundaries, took financial risks, challenged convention, and created opportunities for themselves at a time when women had few models for doing so. In many ways, they were among the earliest female entrepreneurs of the twentieth century—building businesses, cultivating personal brands, developing influential networks, and turning their creative instincts into livelihoods.

More than a history of design, Her Design Story is about what happens when women trust their own ideas and refuse to let circumstance define what comes next. Their names may not all be familiar, but their experiences feel surprisingly contemporary. Their stories remind us that a creative life rarely follows a straight line and that reinvention, at any age or stage of life, can become its own kind of legacy.

About The Author:

Pamela Rainey is a designer, writer, and lifelong researcher who believes some of the most fascinating stories are the ones history has overlooked. After decades working in the design industry, her curiosity about the women who helped shape it led her down a research path filled with unexpected discoveries—stories of ambition, creativity, love, loss, resilience, and reinvention.

Her book, Her Design Story: Entrepreneurs Who Shaped an Industry (1900s–1960s), brings eighteen of those remarkable women back into the conversation. Through their lives, Pamela explores not only how women helped build a modern industry, but how they created opportunities for themselves at a time when few paths were open to them.

A professional interior designer, educator, and creative consultant, Pamela has spent her career looking closely at the people, objects, and ideas that shape the way we live. Her writing continues that exploration, inviting readers to look again at familiar histories and discover the women whose stories have been hiding in plain sight.
