On Tour 05/03/22-05/31/22 ”The Sharp Edge Of Mercy” by Connie Hertzberg Mayo

Release Date:
May 6, 2022

About The Book:

In 1890, when a nursing assistant job opens at the New York Cancer Hospital, young Lillian Dolan hurries to apply, eager to pursue her dream career. Working there would require her to find a babysitter for the blind and mute sister in her care, but Lillian is undaunted. She patches together a plan after landing the job, assuming she has now triumphed over the greatest challenge associated with her employment.

But Lillian soon runs into troubling work situations, including a shocking request from a patient and unwanted attention from an all-powerful surgeon. Faced with moral quandaries and even possible arrest over one of her decisions, Lillian summons her best qualities to resolve things—determination, quick thinking, and fairness—but she’s soon out of her depth. As work challenges escalate, so do family issues, leaving Lillian with one friend and ally: Jupiter, the young Black man who runs the hospital crematorium.

Sometimes, though, one friend is enough.
