About The Book:
My Daughter’s Boyfriends is a short story collection from the Pushcart Prize–winning writer Penny Jackson. Her female narrators explore the loss of love and innocence, as well as the strength to overcome adversity and the need for redemption. The setting of these stories ranges from a hotel in Jamaica to New York City during the terror reign of Son of Sam to a summer camp for teenage girls in New Hampshire. Original, entertaining, thought-provoking, My Daughter’s Boyfriends will prove to be of special appeal to readers with an interest in coming-of-age stories about women.
About The Author:
I was born in Manhattan, and grew up in the turbulent decades of the 1970s and 1980s in a city scarred by Son of Sam and the terrible AIDS epidemic. I graduated from Barnard College with honors in creative writing and won the prestigious Elizabeth Janeway prize in creative writing. I began writing short stories in college, and one of them, about a rebellious teenager in Los Angeles titled L.A. Child, was published by StoryQuarterly and won The Pushcart Prize. I was awarded a Mirrielies Fellowship to study creative writing at Stanford University but finished my MA at Boston University, My first novel, Becoming THe Butlers, published in 1990, https://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Butlers-Bantam-New-Fiction/dp/0553070363, was chosen as one of the best books for young adults by The New York Public Library and then optioned for film by American Zoetrope and Warner Brothers. Although the film was not made into a film, Untreed Reads, an independent publishing company in San Francisco, reissued the book. They also published my first collection of short stories, L.A. Child. Several of these stories were presented at Dixon Place, a theater in Lower Manhattan, as theatrical monologues.
My stories, essays, poems and memoirs have been published in literary magazines here and abroad including The Edinburgh Review, The Croton Review, The Ontario Review,Adrift (Ireland) Gargoyle (England) and Lilith. My new collection of stories includes two prize winning stories: My Daughter’s Boyfriends, (1st prize in Lilith Magazine Fiction Competition) My First Brassiere (Best of Short Fiction, 2022) and Prince Hal, winner of Eunice Willis Non-Fiction Prize.
I am also a playwright and a screenwriter with both award-winning play productions and films.https://www.pennybrandtjackson.com/
