On Tour 01/16/23- 02/10/23 “Sisters of Castle Leod” by Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard

Release Date: January 19, 2023

About The Book:

Ladies Sibell and Constance Mackenzie are as opposite as any sisters could be. Sibell is petite and “bookish,” often accused of being a dreamer. She claims first-hand experience of ghosts and spirits, and her “sixth sense” has even foretold an earthquake. A spiritualist and a believer in reincarnation, she writes pagan-inspired romantic novels that soon become all the rage among Edwardian London’s smart set. Constance, who stands over six feet tall, is a swimming champion, expert horsewoman, and a big game hunter. Known for her headstrong nature, her exploits increasingly challenge the edicts of “proper” British society.

The sisters begin to drift apart soon after Sibell, the older, inherits her late father’s titles and estates, becoming the 3rd Countess of Cromartie. Constance is her sister’s “presumptive heir,” but only until Sibell can produce a direct heir of her own. The birth of Sibell’s first child sets in motion a series of odd and tragic events, pitting sister against sister in an atmosphere of jealousy and suspicion. Feeling herself the victim of Constance’s treachery, Sibell cuts all ties and bans Constance from their childhood home, Castle Leod.

The paths the sisters choose as a result of their estrangement will have very different consequences. Sibell embarks on a journey of spiritual discovery that leads her first to Venice, the most haunted city in the world, and then to the ancient Phoenician port of Tyre to confront the man she believes is her lover from a past life. Constance pursues a career as a Greek-style barefoot dancer in the music halls of London and New York, earning King Edward’s official disapproval.

The years bring more tragedy and, on occasion, a softening of hearts. Still, it is only the sudden reality of death that finally compels the sisters to reveal long-held secrets that have kept them apart and try, one last time, to find common ground.

Author Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard brings to life the often-bizarre world of early 20th century spiritualism in this deeply psychological drama of two sisters struggling to understand each other and themselves, narrated in the distinctive voice of Sibell Lilian Mackenzie, 3rd Countess of Cromartie

Book Blurbs:

Set in the misty mountains and untraversed wilderness of the Scottish Highlands, the novel has an atmospheric feel that captivated me. I would heartily recommend SISTERS OF CASTLE LEOD, a bittersweet saga of sisterhood, to anyone appreciating historical fiction.” –Reviewed by Shrabastee Chakraborty for Readers’ Favorite, 5 stars

“Whilst the historical element of this novel can easily be compared to some of the great historical novelists, like Sharon Kay Penman …, the ghostly apparitions and contact with the spirit world add an original view of … Sibell Lilian Mackenzie, 3rd Countess of Cromartie, [who] truly comes alive in this classic.” –Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers’ Favorite, 5 stars
