About The Book:
In 1936 Kitty Garland-Fry and her siblings move with their bohemian artist parents to the small British island of Guernsey. Marooned amid her family’s chaotic lifestyle, Kitty, a passionate writer of fairytales, fears she’ll die of boredom and frustration.
In Nazi Berlin, meanwhile, Lukas von Harnitz, an idealistic, aristocratic young Roman Catholic seminarian, is reluctantly leaving for Guernsey, too, forced to interrupt his priestly studies to take his newly widowed English-born mother back home to her family and safety. Fiercely anti-Nazi, he can’t help feeling that he’s abandoning both his country and his calling.
Kitty and Lukas meet my chance and, drawn together in their shared loneliness, bond quickly over poetry and books. Their days on beautiful Guernsey unfold like a quiet, sunlit dream, sheltered from both the gathering storm of war and the pull of duty. Then friendship begins to deepen into something more, at the very moment when history is about to demand they both choose who, and what, they truly believe in – and what they are willing to lose.
About The Author:
Catherine Taylor is a former journalist, she was born and brought up on Guernsey, then went on to study German history and language both in the UK and Germany, giving rise to a lifelong passion for twentieth century history.
