About The Book:
Philadelphia 1841. Seventeen-year-old Annis Hargrave is on the run from a man she saw commit an unspeakable act. Orphaned and impoverished, she and her brother Ben escape their troubled past and arrive in the city seeking a fresh start.
To keep them off the streets, Annis sells her mother’s cherished heirloom jewelry, but it will soon be gone if she doesn’t find work soon. One day at a local park, a fateful encounter alters the Hargrave’s fortune: Annis is offered a position by Dr. Thomas Mütter, professor and surgeon at Jefferson Medical College, as the school’s artist.
The illustrious doctor specializes in reconstructive surgery on the grotesquely deformed—what many consider monsters. The flamboyant Dr. Mütter tasks Annis with drawing his extensive collection of medical curiosities—including anatomical models, organs preserved in jars, and bones—for the school.
But just when Annis thinks she’s left her troubled past behind, she discovers the man she believed she’d never see again has found her. This time, he won’t let Annis slip through his fingers. When she stumbles on a corpse and her brother vanishes, Annis is forced to confront her past and fight for everything she holds dear. Even if she must pay the ultimate price.
