About The Book:
Lauren Brown is enamored with geology—the “deep time” revealed in rocks and Earth’s internal processes. Sparked by her experience rafting in the Grand Canyon, she becomes excited to pursue a career in geology. She struggles, though, because in the 1970s in her male-dominated field, men, including a predatory professor, are often enamored with her, or completely disrespectful of her status as a colleague. Except Chris Connor, the one guy in her graduate program at Texas Polytechnic who proves to be a reliable, steady friend.
To add to her woes, Lauren’s husband, Kenny, strays, and they separate.
Despite these challenges, Lauren thrives on the adventure geology affords her—studying undersea volcanoes, guiding clueless undergraduates in a remote national park, and climbing canyons in Oregon to collect rock samples. Each adventure builds her confidence and academic credentials, and when she later reconciles with Kenny, Lauren feels renewed optimism about her future.
When Mount St. Helen’s volcanic activity begins, Lauren and Chris visit, camping outside the Red Zone. Kenny decides to join them, fueled by their enthusiasm to witness a volcanic eruption. Like other scientists, though, Lauren and Chris are too trusting of the volcano’s history. No one is prepared for the catastrophic blast; no one is prepared for the after-effects.
With beautiful descriptions that reflect Lauren’s awe and appreciation for the world she discovers, as well as the rich cast of characters, Bogue shares the engaging story of an adventurous, earnest young woman carving out a life on her own terms, in her own time.
