About The Book:
An unsanctioned love, a nation divided, a plea for justice.
A tyrannical President. The specter of racism inflaming. A nation in moral crisis. As relevant today as it was two hundred years ago, Red Clay, Running Waters is the little-known story of John Ridge, a Cherokee man dedicated to his people’s cause, and his White wife, Sarah, a woman devoted to his search for justice.
In 1824, John Ridge, promising son of a Cherokee leader, returns from his New England education with his bride, envisioning a better world, one they both can have a hand in. As their society flourishes and the future appears bright, tensions over Indian Removal and States Rights thrust the Ridge family and the Cherokee people into the crossfire of a divided America.
Witnessing their community no longer shielded from persecution, the Ridges stand against the forces of tyranny, setting a course to preserve the Cherokee Nation, only to find themselves forced to choose between their love for each other, their conscience, and their duty to the Cherokee people.
In a vivid true story of politics, race, and religion centered on Native America in the turbulent Jacksonian era, this heart-wrenching story explores the meaning of love, endurance and sacrifice, reaching a stunning and haunting conclusion.
About The Author:
Leslie Simmons writes about people at the center of defining moments in American history. Fascinated by the pioneers – the lesser known, but nonetheless incredible people with the arrows in their backs – she uses the power of Historical Fiction to illuminate what lies behind the scenes, and how a past we didn’t live shapes the lives we live today. After decades of research, Leslie followed a path marked by serendipities to the story she knew she had to write, her debut novel, RED CLAY, RUNNING WATERS.
Leslie has taught a course on Native Americans of the Southeast, restored two 19th Century houses (one award winning), and also holds a degree in Art. She has been a member of the Trail of Tears Association since 1999 belongs to the Women’s Fiction Writers Association, and the Historical Novel Society. She is also a contributing moderator for the American Historical Novels Facebook group.
